Governor's conference files, 1969-1980 [state publication].

This series consists of proceedings of governor's conferences on libraries and related materials. The First Governor's Conference on Ala. Libraries was held 1969 Oct. 15-16 in the Capitol House Chamber (Montgomery) for the purpose of encouraging public interest, participation, and support in the development of a long-range plan for the libraries of the state. In addition to the proceedings, which contain Governor Albert Brewer's address, other speeches and dialogs, and reports of workshop discussions, the publication also includes maps, copies of correspondence, lists of delegates attending and organizations invited, and reprints of articles. It is illustrated by color and black and white photographs. Accompanying the report are delegates' packets of conference items, which include a Dept. of Education publication, Alabama's Demonstration Libraries. The Ala. Governor's Conference on Library and Information Services, held 1979 Jan. 7-9 in the Montgomery Civic Center, was chaired by Bob Ingram. It also solicited public participation in defining state and national goals for the development of future library and information services. The Conference was a midway point from the district level to the national level, when President Jimmy Carter would call the first White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services in 1979. Included are a summary of proceedings, with addresses by Governor George Wallace, Bob Ingram, Anthony Miele, and others, a forward by Fob James, a list of resolutions, a register of delegates and alternates, and photographs; a final report of the Conference to the National Commission of Libraries and Information Science by Anthony Miele, which also contains summaries of district meetings and remarks by Tennant S. McWilliams, William D. Barnard, Leah Rawls Atkins, Guin A. Nance, and Michael Thomason, and newspaper clippings; and a summary of "The Systems Study" (A Study of Organization and Governance of Alabama State Library Systems by John Hall) about multitype cooperative library systems. The series documents the role of the Library Service in the planning and development of public libraries in the state.
